jrn 420: painting with light

420paintingwlight01
Waterford senior Sean Proctor stretches out his arms and legs as Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man.
f/14 and 30" shutter - Strobed his face and lit his body/drew the circle with a flashlight. (Note that the only reason I'm squarecropping is that that's the way da Vinci did it, yo.)

Iron Mountain senior Libby March illustrates the Greek mythological character Medusa, whose hair was said to be made of snakes.
f/14 and 30" shutter - wasn't my original idea, so I used myself as a model, which was...again, difficult.

haiti: a look back

While working on a new portfolio edit, I retoned some Haiti images previously buried in the archive (with some help). I miss the kids more all the time.

invading privacy

We The Kings lead vocalist and guitarist Travis Clark sits with Sara McMall of Ann Arbor in the band's tour bus before performing Sunday night at Finch Fieldhouse.

I arrived at Finch Fieldhouse tonight and there were no media passes left. After calling various CM-Life editors, I hooked up with the reporter covering the We The Kings concert, who tried to explain things to security, to no avail. Apparently someone claiming to be from CM-Life had the pass. I was given a new one and told CM-Life needed to be better about communication. I went in and straight backstage, hoping to catch moments of the bands before they went on. They weren't there, so I decided to try to find them and discovered their bus, asked to be admitted in.

The guys were friendly about my being there and I shot until security instructed me to leave. I went back to the stage area to shoot the opening bands.

We The Kings drummer Danny Duncan, left, and lead vocalist and guitarist Travis Clark beat out rhythm on Pringles cans, working to beat a Guinness Book of World Records bar before performing Sunday night at Finch Fieldhouse.

Five minutes in, I was motioned over to the side and was told I "should know better, being from the media." I had evidently been "invading privacy." I actually thought security would try to take the camera and delete photos. Grateful it didn't come to that, since I would've declined.

Tried to be polite and explain myself, but surrendered the hard won media pass and left. I'm not sure what to make of the experience.

I wanted to make offbeat, real-life pictures instead of standard band shots. I don't think I was "invading privacy;" but to my editors at CM-Life, I apologize for any issues this causes.

new portfolio edit

Thanks to some help from Jake May, Sean Proctor, the Midland guys, Nathan Morgan, Thomas Simonetti, and Nick King, I've hammered out a new portfolio edit. There's more to be done, but here's the progress so far.

Russ Attwater, 72, lived with heart problems for four years after his first bypass operation. Although there was a high chance he wouldn’t survive another procedure, he decided to undergo a second open heart surgery.

Atop a hill in the Delmas district of Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, life inside an orphanage goes on in the wake of a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that killed nearly 230,000 people. On January 12, 2010 the quake displaced 1.3 million people, and among those displaced are some of the 15 children living in My Heart's Home, an orphanage supported by a U.S.-based non-profit organization. Outside the walls of the home, a city of 2 million inhabitants tries to rebuild in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, but inside the orphanage, life goes on.

ball state wrecked central yesterday

...and I shot it for CM-Life. Been shooting a fair amount of high school football lately, and usually college ball is less brutal, but not so for the Chips yesterday...

I'm hungry for life and pictures and giving of myself. Photojournalism, for me, is an avenue for documentation, art, and compassion. All photos copyright Libby March, Central Michigan Life, The Midland Daily News, The Jackson Citizen Patriot, or the Concord Monitor.
