the winter blues

Did a color-themed essay for the Citpat which ran as the Sunday photo page. Here's some frames, and the brief text.

January. It’s the month that starts the year, but seems like the end of the sun. Overcast skies, slush, and dirty old snow make the world seem gray. With the sun in sporadic attendance and when the landscape is drab, it brings on that unwelcome guest some call “seasonal depression,” but can be christened simply “the blues.”

As a photographer, it’s my job to seek out the pretty in the world and make pictures, in hopes that everyday beauty can be a little more evident. But I’m no exception to the winter mood struggle. So to combat the moody blues, I spent a few days searching for pretty
blue - the color blue.

And once you’re paying attention, it’s everywhere...on houses, mailboxes, cars, and clothes. It’s interesting how life seems to change when you’re looking out for the bright among the dull. “Winter blues” don’t have to be a downer after all.

I'm hungry for life and pictures and giving of myself. Photojournalism, for me, is an avenue for documentation, art, and compassion. All photos copyright Libby March, Central Michigan Life, The Midland Daily News, The Jackson Citizen Patriot, or the Concord Monitor.
